This preliminary study assessed genotype x diet interaction in late growth of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) fed with either a fish meal (FM)- or a fish oil (FO)-based diet (M) or an all-plant-based (PB) diet. A total of 550 fish from 224 families were reared together and tagged. DNA was sampled and microsatellites were used to assign parentage. When fish weight was 192 +/- 54 g, two tanks were fed with M (FM: 100%; FO: 100%) and two others with PB (FM: 0% and FO: 0%). Body weight (BW), fork length (FL) and fillet lipid content (CorrFat) were analysed with a linear model and with REML methodology. We observed no significant differences between groups, but a slightly lower (P=0.03) daily growth coefficient in sea bass fed PB than in those fed M.... |

Seabass were fed for 4 months with diets where the lipid was provided as either canola oil (CO), palm oil ( PO) or fish oil (FO), to generate diversity in their tissue fatty acid (FA) composition and investigate how this influenced major traits of exercise performance, cardiac performance and respiratory metabolism. In particular, based upon previous observations, we investigated the hypothesis that enriching the fish tissues with oleic and linoleic acids (OA, 18:1n-9 and LA, 18:2n-6, respectively) from the CO and PO diets would improve maximum exercise and cardiac performance, and increase aerobic metabolic scope. This proved to be the case; exercise respirometry on bass fitted with cardiac flow probes revealed that those fed CO and PO diets had a... |

The capability of turbots to use self-feeders was studied using 3 groups of 100 juveniles. Feeding activity reached a plateau after 20 days. Almost all feeding activity was observed during the photophase, and the acrophase was associated with dawn. The proportion of nocturnal demands was the highest in the replicate with the lowest feed efficiency, suggesting that feed waste was mainly occurring during nocturnal feeding activity. During the last 30 days of the experiment, demands were only rewarded during two periods of 2.5 h.day(-1). Feed efficiency was improved and was homogeneous between the three tanks, but the voluntary feed intake was reduced. It is concluded that turbots are able to use self-feeders but they do not adapt quickly, and they are not... |

The purpose of this study was to investigate the combined effect of the incorporation of vegetable products in diet and temperature on enzymatic pathways for high unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) desaturation in sea bass larvae. Four replicated groups were fed a low (LH; 0.8% EPA+DHA) or a high (HH; 2.2% EPA+DHA) n-3 HUFA microparticulated diet from mouth opening, six days post-hatching and were reared at 16 or 22 degrees C. The four experimental conditions (LH16, HH16, LH22 and HH22) were tested for 45 days. At the end of the experiment, body weight, total length and biomass were affected by temperature (P<0.001), while biomass as well as fresh body weight was also influenced by diet (P<0.05 and P<0.001 respectively). This always lead to the same... |

Semi-purified diets were used to feed gilthead sea bream larvae as first food from mouth opening until day 17. Four diets were formulated on the basis of a previous one used as control (D1). Three experimental diets differed only by the lipids added. One diet contained n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (n-3 HUFA) plus arachidonic acid (D2), one diet n-3 HUFA without arachidonic acid (D3) and one diet without n-3 and n-6 HUFA (D4). The three experimental diets contained 18:3n-6 in order to follow the influence of dietary HUFAs on elongation-desaturation capacities. Larval growth and survival were similar with diet D1 and D2. Lowest growth and survival were observed for larvae fed the HUFA free diet D4. Larval survival but not growth was significantly... |

Turbot, Scophthalmus maximus Rafinesque, 1810: Psetta maxima Linnaeus, 1758, is a marine demersal carnivorous flatfish of the Scophthalmidae family, relatively abundant in Europe: from 68°N down to Morocco 30°N. It is also abundant in the Mediterranean Sea as far as Turkey. But it is lacking in the Black Sea, where two very close species, S. maeoticus and S. ponticus, are naturally found (Figure 1). Turbot are caught on sand, gravel, or mixed bottoms at a depth of 20 to 70 m. The total annual catch is less than 10,000 for all Europe in spite of the high market price: from 10 to 25 U.S. $/kg according to the country and the size of the fish (0.65 to 15 kg). Turbot was selected for aquaculture in the early 1970s, both in the United Kingdom and France due to... |

A study was undertaken with marketable size turbot to evaluate the effects of dietary fat levels on chemical composition. lipogenesis and flesh quality, Four experimental diets containing graded levels of fish oil in order to obtain 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% of crude fat were fed to triplicate groups of turbot (initial body weight of 660 g) for 12 weeks in full strength seawater at temperature of 17 degreesC. Nutrient digestibility was not influenced by dietary fat levels. The best growth performance was observed in fish fed 10% and 15% dietary fat. High dietary lipid levels led to higher fat deposition in whole fish, although lipid level in muscle remained low (1.1% in dorsal muscle and 1.7% in ventral muscle irrespective of diet), Significant subcutaneous... |

The influence of dietary TAG source (fish oil, triolein, and coconut oil) and level (7.5 and 15% of the diet) on growth, lipase activity, and mRNA level was studied in sea bass larvae, from mouth opening until day 24 and from day 37 to 52. Fish oil and triolein induced better growth in both experiments, this being significant at a higher dietary level. Coconut oil significantly decreased growth at the higher level, possibly as the result of an excessive supply of medium-chain TAG. Growth was not related to lipase specific activity, suggesting a production in excess to dietary needs. Body lipid content was positively related to dietary lipid level and was affected by lipid quality. In addition, larval FA composition generally reflected that of the diet. The... |

Triplicate groups of European sea bass juveniles (60 g) were fed for 84 days two experimental diets containing either vegetable or marine oil (0.4 and 2.2% n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acid [n-3 HUFA] dry matter in LD and HD, respectively) and held at 22 or 29 degreesC (LD-22, LD-29, HD-22 and HD-29 groups). Significant differences in mass gain between the two diets and temperatures were, observed from day 28 onwards, and on day 84, weight was 18% higher in the HD-29 group than in the LD-22 group (the highest and lowest values. respectively). Over the 84-day period-SGR was significantly affected both by temperatures and diets (P=6x10(-4) and 2x10(-4) respectively), averaging 1.01 and 1.07 in the HD-22 and HD-29 groups compared to 0.92 and 1.0 in the LD-22... |

Odour-active compounds in muscle of turbot (Psetta maxima) fed experimental diets containing fish oil (FO), soybean oil (SO) or linseed oil (LO) were investigated by a gas chromatography/olfactometry technique. Thirty-one areas associated with odours were detected in muscle extracts. Among the compounds responsible for these odours, 23 were formed by oxidation of unsaturated fatty acids. Independently of diet, (E)-2-penten-1-ol and (E)-3-hexen-1-ol contribute strongly to the odour of turbot. (E,Z)-2,6-Nonadienal, (E)-2-pentenal and (E,E)-1,3-(Z)-5-octatriene seem to contribute strongly to the odour of turbot fed diets containing high levels of n-3 PUFA (FO and LO groups). Hexanal and decanal show a high detection frequency in turbot fed diets containing... |

Plant-based products in fish diets are valuable protein alternatives to fishmeal for the aquafeed industry. Many plant feed ingredients contain polyphenolic compounds, including tannins, which can have beneficial or adverse effects. The tolerable threshold of ingested tannins is unknown for marine carnivorous fishes. We studied the effects of tannic acid (TA) supplementation to the diet of juvenile European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) by measuring growth, feed utilization and digestibility, and carcass composition. We randomly allocated groups of fish (initial mean body weight of 10.2 ± 0.7 g; n = 40 fish per tank) to 12 replicate cylindrical-conical tanks (three per treatment). The fish were assigned to one of four dietary treatments for five weeks:... |

The fatty acid (FA) content of fish is generally said to reflect fatty acid composition of the diet. In fact, incorporation of FA into tissues is modulated by various metabolic factors, and final composition will depend upon the initial FA content, cumulative intake of dietary fatty acids, growth rate and duration. Analysis of time course of changes in FA composition should be easier with animals having different initial FA profiles, which are subsequently fed a diet with the same FA composition. Data from two studies, one with brown trout and another with turbot were used. Fish were first fed with diets containing one of three different oils (soybean oil (SO), linseed oil (LO) and fish oil (FO)), and subsequently fed the same fish oil-based diet... |

The effects of essential fatty acid deficiency and temperature on the fatty acid profiles of polar lipids (PL) and neutral lipids (NL) from various tissues (muscle, liver, gills, eyes and brain) of European sea bass juveniles were compared in a two factorial design. Fish (60 g) were held for 84 days at 22 or 29 C (upper limit for growth) and fed either at a lower or a higher level than n-3 HUFA minimal requirement for growth (0.4% and 2.2% n-3 HUFA dry matter for diets LD and HD, respectively). Essential fatty acid deficiency had a major influence on fatty acids in NL fraction of all tissues, a more moderate influence on PL of muscle, liver and gills, while a low and very low diet influence was observed on eyes and brain PL fatty acid content,... |

A quantitative approach is presented to evaluate fatty acid incorporation in fish. Fatty acid composition of European sea bass juvenile was studied during an experiment using 6 isoproteic (54%) and isolipidic (18%) diets containing 0.23, 0.56, 0.72, 0.86, 1.01 and 1.86% DM n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (n-3 HUFA). Whole body fatty acid compositions were studied at the beginning and after 52 and 81 days feeding, fatty acid profiles evolved during time under dietary influences. Incorporations of individual fatty acids into total lipids were calculated as increases in individual fatty acids as percentages of the increase in total fatty acids during growth, on a per animal basis. Relative incorporations (RI) so defined generated similar profiles for the... |

The purpose of this study was to check if it is possible to influence sea bass juvenile metabolism by a conditioning of larvae from day 6 post hatching to day 45 to a low or a high HUFA compound diet (LH, 0.8% EPA + DHA and HH, 2.2% EPA + DHA) when reared at 16 or 22 °C. Following a 3-month intermediate period (at 19 °C using a commercial diet), the adaptability of the 4 initial larval groups to a HUFA experimental deprived diet (0.5% EPA + DHA) were tested at 19 °C in a 60 day-experiment (d-151211). The four experimental duplicated conditions were ex-LH16 and ex-HH16 for the 2 groups previously reared at 16 °C (initial weight, 7.3 ± 0.5 g) and ex-LH22 and ex-HH22 for the 2 groups previously reared at 22 °C (initial weight, 11.1 ± 0.5 g). Recent advances have led to the development of inert diets for first-feeding marine fish larvae. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate fatty acid (FA) incorporation into larva using practical-type and semipurified diets as first food for larvae. Experimental microparticulate diets were fed to gilthead sea bream larvae, right from the mouth opening to day 21 post hatching. Five basal diets were compared, using fish meat or casein as main protein sources, and fish protein concentrate or casein hydrolysates and algae powder (Schizochytrium). Diets contained soybean lecithin to provide polar lipids and this also provided a high linoleic acid (18:2n-6) content. n-3 HUFA (1.5-1.7% DM) were mainly in dietary neutral lipids, with a part in polar lipids... |

For sustainable aquaculture, the removal of marine resource ingredients in fish diets is an important objective. While most studies focus on the replacement of fish oil by vegetable oil, little is known on the nutritional effects of presence (which corresponds to the control diet) or absence of dietary fish oil. We studied fatty acid composition of brush-border membranes and digestive enzyme activities of the intestine and measured the expression and activities of several enzymes involved in the hepatic intermediary metabolism of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) fed for 7 weeks with or without fish oil. The diets were pair-fed to ensure that fish fed either diet had comparable carbohydrate and protein intakes. Absence of fish oil significantly reduced... |

European sea bass juveniles (14.4+/-0.1 g mean weight) were fed diets containing different levels of fish oil then of n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (n-3 HUFA) for 12 weeks. The fish performance as well as fatty acid (FA) composition of neutral and polar lipids from whole body after 7 and 12 weeks feeding were studied. The requirements of juvenile sea bass for n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (n-3 HUFA) were studied by feeding fish diets containing six different levels of n-3 HUFA ranging from 0.2% to 1.9% of the diet, with approximately the same DHA/EPA ratio (1.5:1). The growth rate at the end of the trial showed significant differences. Fish fed low dietary n-3 HUFA (0.2% DM of the diet) showed significantly lower growth than the diet 3 (0.7%),... |

The aim of the study was to investigate the replacement of fish oil by vegetable oils and the effects of a washout with a return to fish oil on growth performances and lipid metabolism. three experimental fish meal-based isonitrogenous (crude protein content: 57.5%) and isolipidic (crude lipid content: 16.5%) diets were formulated containing either 9% of added fish oil (170), soybean oil (SO), or linseed oil (LO). Each diet was distributed to triplicate groups of 25 marketable size turbot (initial body weight of 579 g) grown in seawater at water temperature of 17 T. Fish were fed once a day to visual satiety. At the end of the growth trial, which lasted 13 weeks, all groups of turbot were fed with FO diet for 8 weeks. The growth of turbot was high, but the... |
